well, although the first of two short work weeks means less when you're not working, it is still a festive time of the year and it's nice to live in a part of the country that still takes its vacation time very seriously. although for the first time in all the years i've been aware of the holiday the forecast is calling for bad weather, it still seems like a lot of things to keep me perky. here are a few things that helped put a smile on my face during the past week.
feedback :: thanks very much to everyone who took the time to comment either here or through other venues about some of the posts i've made this week. in particular, it really made me feel good hearing from those who appreciated the post on the mac "bloggers' obsessions" collection. this is a funny collection, because no one has ever tried something quite like this. i think it's encouraging that the reaction was obviously greater than mac had anticipated, with two of the shades selling out before the collection was officially launched on line. since mac retains all the rights to these products, we can hope [and assume, since it would make financial sense] that they'll re-promote the successful shades in the future and have them available to an international audience.
because i already showed off a look with sonoran rain and hocus pocus, here's a look at the other shades that i picked up "in action". my thoughts on these shades haven't changed since my original review- each has the hallmark of someone who truly cared about getting it right. "parisian skies", like "hocus pocus", is extremely pigmented and blended very, very well. "jealousy wakes" packs a big punch of colour. although i found my brush stirred up a bit of powder on the surface, it was not powdery on application [i.e., no nasty powder fallout everywhere]. and considering that prince is playing in montreal this weekend, i figure it's only appropriate that i give "all of my purple life" a swing in his honour.

knowing that people who write about cosmetics can be called on to be creators, it got me to thinking of what i'd do should i be called on for ideas. so if mac [or another company] feels like doing this sort of thing again, i'd like to say that i already have some ideas ripe for the plucking...

simon- a light grey-turquoise shade with a slight gold shimmer, exactly matched to the colour of simon's beautiful eyes
hecubus- a rich, ultra-dark brown with a sheen, just like the colour of hecubus' sumptuous seal points
julia- a light silvery platinum matched to the shade of my little girl's eyes
seth- a rich, muted magenta ["antique fuchsia"] like the colour of seth's adorable and often protruding tongue

arthur- a super-soft rich black liner with a rusty-coloured shimmer [perfect for making a slightly different cat's-eye]

that's my dream line up. [well, i could probably think of more lip products, but i'll stop there...]
back to the future :: now that traditional radio is pretty much entirely obsolete, i'll be making a triumphant, one-time only return to the airwaves on july 2nd on montreal's ckut-fm. thanks to the miracle of technology, you can listen in on line from anywhere in the world.
for those of you who don't know, i worked for years in community radio, starting in halifax and then moving on to montreal. the reason that this blog is called "more like space" is because that was my radio show in both cities. i loved doing radio. it kept me actively interested in music, because i was always eager for something new to share. my time at these stations also exposed me to a lot of different music and culture and to a lot of different people, the importance of which i can't overstate. but most important, it was through talking on the radio that i managed to finally start to build up some self-confidence. that period of my life was the first time i ever remember being able to talk about myself- not just me as an imitation of what i saw around me, but me as a distinct individual- and, as you can see, i'm still doing quite well on this front.

i'm certain that my radio shows never had the profound effect on anyone else that they did on me, but i do know that i was able to connect some people with music that they liked, which is a good thing to do. i even found a reference to my show in a footnote of someone's stars of the lid review. ironically, it's a misremembering, because, while i was on air during that time, i never did do the whole "sound collage" thing. i suppose it might have sounded like i did, though.
so i'm taking advantage of the opportunity to go back on the airwaves and play a lot of music that i don't get to do so much in my live dj sets. so it'll be a more experimental, more "spacey" more like space. i'll be occupying the space normally reserved for "stereophobic", but since the host is on hiatus, i'm allowed out to play this once. i hope i remember how it works...
as i mentioned last week, i've put myself on a diet in order to shed a little excess baggage i seem to have accumulated. so far, so good. i have returned to my proven method of paying careful attention to calories consumed versus calories expended. i can get a bit obsessive over details, so this is actually something that keeps my brain calm. after a couple of weeks, the process of balancing these things in my head becomes natural and i won't have to think about it consciously so much. getting started, however, can be a bit of a pain, because i find i have to expend way too much energy thinking about food. and the last thing you want to do when you're arguing daily with your body about how much it really needs, as opposed to how much it thinks it needs, is to be put in a situation where food is front of mind. as i said, this is a phase of my dieting process that tends to pass after a couple of weeks. along with the phase that involves my skin breaking out because it's not so sure about the changes i'm forcing on myself.
i'm hopeful at the moment that this week sees an end to the postal strike that has stopped all letter traffic around the country. like most people, i use the postal system infrequently and rely on it less every year, but there are still things that have to be sent through the post, unless one wants to incur the hefty charges of private couriers. as we try to get conversion in front of as many industry people and festivals as we can, it would be kind of nice if we could, you know, send copies of the damn film.
both sides in this dispute have done a piss-poor job of making their case. both seem to be assuming that the issues are just self-evident, but that isn't true. i'd say that hurts the union a lot more than the corporation, although the union has at least thrown up a page [and yes, given the quality of the information- completely lacking in statistics and clear terminology, that double entendre is intentional] outlining their concerns. canada post's web site simply contains media releases with no useful information whatsoever. i could always try watching the ndp filibuster to try to block back to work legislation from being passed through the house of commons, which might give me some information [although more likely it would just cure my insomnia and leave me in the dark]. what i think would be appropriate is that, given that the corporation and its workers draw money from the public coffers [your tax dollars at work. or not], both should be required as a matter of course to make any formal offers readily available to the public. i just wouldn't advise putting them in the mail.
and finally, this is an oldie but a goody as far as photos of the cats go... seth and julia were still pretty much babies here... they grow up so quickly...
