In yesterday's post, I mentioned how I've been thinking again about the work of Marie Laurencin. I've also been looking at paintings by the German expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, in particular this portrait:

Marie Laurencin is one of my favourite artists and I often find myself thinking about her work when I am painting.

I've just found this lovely portrait of Laurencin on a French blog and was struck by how much she looks like her paintings.

The Black Feathered Hat

I've developed this painting from a drawing (below) done in response to a thumbnail photograph that I saw in an Internet report about Ladies' Day at Aintree. The lady in the picture was wearing a pink wrap around dress or shawl of somekind, but really the palette was triggered by my coincidently enjoying the sight of a cherry tree this morning that is blossom behind the back of the house. The colour of the blossom looks wonderful against the clear blue skies that we have had with a weekend of glorious spring weather.
