Video: The worst home plate call in baseball history costs Pirates game in NINETEENTH inning
I can't think of a call worse than this one at home plate:
ESPN reports on the aftermath:
The ump was right on top of that and if he couldn't see that tag then 1) he should get his eyes checks, and 2) he should be fired.

Having Soccer World Cup Decided On Shootout Is Stupid And Here's Why
OK, so Japan beat the US in the World Cup:
And via The Macomb Daily: Japan beats U.S. in penalty shootout for 1st World Cup title
And via The Macomb Daily: Japan beats U.S. in penalty shootout for 1st World Cup title
Japan has won the Women's World Cup, stunning the United States 3-1 in a penalty shootout Sunday night after coming from behind twice in a 2-2 tie. Here's the thing that irks me, and it has nothing to do with Japan winning. Sports like soccer, hockey and football are team sports. Meaning that many people are involved on both sides of the ball (or puck). There is a coordinated offense, and a coordinated defense. When you decide a game in a sport like that in a shootout, especially the championship game, it totally takes the team concept out of the picture. It devolves into a 1 on 1 situation. In hockey, you play overtime after overtime until someone scores. In football, you ply overtime after overtime until someone scores. But in soccer the World Cup was decided by this? That's just not right.
Shock Video: Texas Rangers Fan Dies After Trying to Catch Ball
This is just tragic:

Reigning AL MVP Josh Hamilton grabbed the foul ball that ricocheted into left field and tossed it into the stands, as he has countless times before. Shannon Stone, who was at the game with his young son, caught the ball but tumbled over a railing and plunged 20 feet onto concrete. The 39-year-old firefighter from Brownwood died at a hospital a short time later, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Wow: Joey Chestnut scarfed down 62 hot dogs (with buns!) to win 4th of July hot dog eating contest at Coney Island
For the record, I scarfed down 7 hamburger patties (about 1/4 - 1/3 lb each) and a few hot dogs at a cookout yesterday (no buns with either by the way). Which is absolutely puny compared to what Joey Chestnut did in only 10 minutes yesterday:
Wow. Where the heck does all that go? The 'black widow' scarfing down 40 dogs would best most men weighing in at 4 times her weight.

A feelgood vid to wrap the weekend:
His name is Staff Sergeant Michael Kacer, he lost his arm in a rocket attack in Afghanistan in 2008, and this is one great video.
Avril Lavigne plays baseball!
Avril Lavigne was all smiles when she threw out the first pitch before last night's Tampa Bay Rays game, but she lobbed a few four-letter words at the crowd when a technical glitch messed with her post-game concert.
According to local reports, Avril's mic didn't work at the start of her show ... and she responded to the cavalcade of boos by yelling obscenities at crowd.
Rays rep Rick Vaughn tells TMZ, "The Rays demand profanity-free performances from all of our concert performers and we are extremely disappointed by the language used in last night's show. It is not consistent with the family-friendly atmosphere that Tropicana Field is known for."
Calls to Lavigne's rep were not returned.
UPDATE -- Several of our readers were in attendance last night and point out via our message board ... that while Avril did drop a few F-bombs, they weren't directed at anyone in particular. Her real fans, it seems, enjoyed the show just fine.
