Bow ties

yesterday i mentioned that i will be heading towards spain for a week of (hopefully) sunny vacation in june. besides looking for swim/beach shorts, i am also on the lookout for bow ties. for the beach? course not. it's a friend's wedding in three weeks time, and i would like to wear a bow tie for the event. unfortunately i'm not the dandy kind who wears bow ties on weekends or during fashion week, but i thought it'll be nice if there are special occasions for it.

mentioned it on twitter yesterday, and there were several really good recommendations. dal chodha suggested marwood, a stunning debut collection of accessories from designer becky french. i really really love the white lace bow ties, it's so delicately beautiful it will be perfect against my attire choice of a crisp white shirt and navy dinner jacket from h&m x lanvin.

if the lace bow ties from marwood teaches me anything, it'll be texture. wool is not usually a material that i would associate with bow ties, but these glorious handmade woven wool ones from savile row's e tautz are a close contender. i think the burst of summery colors and wool texture will work really well with my light wool navy jacket. my only problem: it comes untied. ermm i need to learn how to tie them up *sheepish*

new to mr porter this week is j crew's selvedge chambray bow tie. especially loving the exposed selvedge edge and slight vintage feel about it. however, it might be a little too casual for this occasion. £49 from mr porter.

for slightly quirky choices: i really love these ceramic bow ties from cor sine labe doli. the matt black ceramic tie will blend in nicely, until one looks at it closely. great conversation piece this will be. i really like the glossy ceramic bow with a slight gold tip. quirky but doesn't quite stick out like a sore thumb.

can't really talk about bow ties without mentioning french designer alexis mabille. the hand made silk and velvet bow tie is so luxurious, paired with the dinner jacket it simply is sumptuous:

thing is, i don't really wear bow ties on normal days. so i won't really get much wear out of it if i spend lots of money on the tie. so getting one from the highstreet is actually very appealing to me right now. i always see nice bow ties whenever i am at topman's oxford circus flagship, so i might just pop in this weekend to see if i can pick one up.

can you believe this man is 46 years old? aaron kwok [郭富城] attended an event in hong kong on new year's day, and performed with baby smooth skin, alexis mabille sequined argyle cardigan, moncler gamme bleu shorts and very questionable tights.

should there be an age limit for sequined cardigans?

and when i said "very questionable tights". i don't even mind the clashing argyle and tartan prints, but would really prefer aaron to wear the long trousers version of the shorts. and his tights looked too big for him too. and if he must wear tights, i really prefer the moncler gamme bleu ones on the left.

Pyrenex x Alexis Mabille glitter embroidered quilted jacket

one of the showpieces i saw at studiohomme's showroom in paris, was this exquisite feather down vest sewn on with thousands of glittery metallic pieces. it was amazing how the metallic pieces reflect the light. definitely the piece to arrive with on a cold winter's party.

on close up, it wasn't just normal sequins but rectangular futuristic shaped pieces.

could wear it the way model florian bourdila wore his...

it could look pretty subdued too isn't it? and with all the handy work, it wasn't as expensive as i thought. the exquisite vest is available online here.

now that is what i call red carpet dressing. i love it when designers wear their own collections, it really does speak volumes. french designer alexis mabille attended the grazia masquerade ball in paris on tuesday, wearing a black double breasted dinner jacket from his fall winter 2008 couture collection.

it is very rare for designers to include a few menswear looks within their womenswear collections, even more so at couture shows. the young couturier showed some very nicely tailored pieces, and the peacock feathered brooch also made it's first appearance at the show.

i really do think the feathered brooches made all the difference to mr mabille's outfit. doesn't he look like a fun person to be with, like one you would love to talk to at a party?

despite the peacock feather butterfly brooch was from 2008, it is still available online here. i really like it, especially the way it's styled on the runway. l00o00ve!

Alexis Mabille x Pyrenex Premium pop up shop at Dover Street, London

to coincide with london fashion week, french label "pyrenex premium" will debut in the uk with a 15day pop up shop at london's dover street from 15th to 30th september. the young but very talented french couturier alexis mabille conjured up a series of ultra lightweight but warm, feather filled coats, vests and biker jackets.

the fit, cuts and colors really do make me look at feather down jackets in a different light. i tend to avoid puffy down jackets, but i find myself really wanting some of the pieces below. practical yet stylish, i find this to be a very good partnership/collaboration between mabille and pyrenex. a young talent shaking things up but not losing any of the company's dna. a perfect fusion of function, performance and a couturier's style and luxury.

the styling was great in the above shots. feather down jackets naturally adds volume to the upper body. pairing it with fitted jeans lends us a more defined shape and silhouette. i really really do love the above pieces. sadly i will be away on vacation during that exact 2 weeks where the pop up shop would be held. i need to find out where else to see the clothes up close and personal in london after that.

failing which, paris in october i will see. oh, did i mention i'll be in paris in october?
