Die Oberpfalz-Truppe (ich, Elton, Michi... leider ohne die Jungs von FWWM, die für ihren großen Auftritt am Sunday Smile proben mussten) kommt am Feierwerkgelände an und wird direkt vorm Sunny Red gefragt (Auftritt Tobias Engler): "Seid ihr die Jungs von Doomina?". Da waren wir schon zu viert. Nach kurzer Unterhaltung wurden wir darauf hingewiesen, dass man nun den Keller betreten könne (Auftritt GemueseJoe).
Dann wurde zu aller erst fürs körperliche Wohlbefinden gesorgt (Bier, Cola, Spezi) und darauf wurde uns gesagt, dass Doomina sowohl in einen Stau geraten seien, als auch in eine Polizeikontrolle. Kurz vorm Auftritt der ersten Band (Malatesta) trafen dann auch die Jungs aus Kärnten und der Rest der PRCler aus Innsbruck ein und die Show konnte los gehen. ___________________________________________________________
The “Oberpfalz-Squad” (me, Elton, Michi…unfortunately without the guys from Fire Walk With Me!, who had to practice for their great gig on the Sunday Smile Festival) arrives at the Feierwerk site and get directly asked (appearance Tobias Engler): “Are you the guys in Doomina?” Then we were four already. After a little conversation we were advised that we could enter the venue.
Then we primary looked after our physical well-being (beer, coke) and we were told that Doomina got into a traffic jam as well as in a police check. Shortly before the beginning of the first performance (Malatesta) the guys from Kärnten and the rest of the PRC members from Innsbruck showed up and the show could begin. ___________________________________________________________

Malatesta betreten die Bühne und geben sofort Gas... die 4 Münchner lieferten Crust vom feinsten, genau so, wie er sein soll: schnell, hart und dreckig. Die meiner Meinung nach viel zu kurze Show (nur ca. 20 Minuten) war energiegeladen und die 4 Musiker waren mit ganzem Herzen bei der Sache. Nur das Münchner Publikum hat das ganze ziemlich kalt gelassen, aber naja, so ist das halt in München... vielleicht waren Malatesta im Hinblick auf die anderen Bands auch nicht die perfekte Wahl als Vorband, mir hat es trotzdem sehr gut gefallen.
Weiter gings mit einer kurzen Umbaupause, nach der Doomina dann ohne Soundcheck ihren Auftritt hatten. ___________________________________________________________
Malatesta enter the stage and immediately kick off…the four Munich guys play Crust at its best. Like it should be: fast, hard and dirty. The performance, which was way too short in my opinion (20 minutes), was bursting with energy and the four musicians where into it wholeheartedly. Only the Munich audience seemed not to be too impressed, but ok… that’s Munich. Maybe Malatesta wasn’t the perfect pick as an opener, but I enjoyed it anyway.
After a short break Doomina started their show without sound check. ___________________________________________________________

Aufmerksame Leser unseres Blogs kennen die 4 Jungs aus Kärnten viellecht schon, deshalb will ich zum Sound nicht mehr all zu viel sagen... vielleicht nur so viel: Sie kennen keine Genregrenzen und haben für sich definitiv einen ganz eigenen Sound kreiert. Ein bischen Post-Rock hier, ein bischen Doom da, dazu noch eine Prise Heavy-Metal-Gitarren-Solos und, was mir sehr aufgefallen ist, ein ganzer Haufen Professionalität. Außer dem fantastischen March On, Dead Man/Hypersonoruos (mit Soundeffekten aus der Spielzeugpistole) habe ich kein Lied erkannt, aber das lag denke ich mal daran, dass hauptsächlich neue Stücke gespielt wurden. Ich darf euch ein ganz ganz großes Lob aussprechen, das was ihr da abgeliefert hab, habe ich so nicht erwartet... eure Lieder sind Live viel besser als auf CD und wenn ihr mal die Chance habt, einen eurer Auftritte mitschneiden zu lassen, dann bitte ich euch darum: Macht es!
Leider war dann bei Doomina nach ca. 45 Minuten schluss und es begann die letzte Umbaupause, die sich ein bisschen dahinzog... ein guter Zeitpunkt, um sich mal mit den Kollegen aus Kärnten ausführlicher zu unterhalten. ___________________________________________________________
Considerate readers of our blog might know the four guys from Carinthia (Austria), therefore I don’t want to loose much words on their sound. Maybe one thing: They don’t know genre limits and created their own sound. A bit of post rock here, a bit of doom there, in addition a small amount of heavy metal guitar solos and what stands out for me, a bunch of professionalism. Except “March On, Dead Man/Hypersonoruos“ (with sound effects of a toy gun), I didn’t recognize any song because they probably played mostly new ones. I have to compliment you for what you showed off, I haven’t expected. Your songs are live much better than on CD and when you get the chance to record one of your performances, I please you: Do it!
Sadly Doomina’s show ended after 45 minutes and the last break got a bit long… which was a good moment to get in touch with the buddies from Carinthia. ___________________________________________________________
In blaues Licht getaucht beginnen Omega Massif ihr Set mit dem Opener der Geisterstadt LP, In der Mine, und von da an war ich wie in trance. Da vor mir der Hannes stand, hab ich von der Performance nicht viel gesehen, was mich aber nicht weiter gestört hat. Für mich hieß es nur: Augen zu und jeden Augenblick genießen. Omega Massif werden der Bezeichnung auf dem Flyer, Post-Metal Monster, absolut gerecht: doomige Gitarrenriffs und wabernder Bass (der meiner Meinung nach vielleicht ein bisschen zu laut war) - Gänsehautstimmung pur. Auch bei Omega Massif muss ich sagen, dass sie live viel besser sind als auf CD, was für mich sowieso das Kriterium für eine wahrlich gute Band darstellt. ___________________________________________________________
Coated in blue light Omega Massif started their set with the first song of the “Geisterstadt” LP “In der Mine”. From there on I was like in a state of trance. Because Hannes was standing in front of me I couldn’t see much of the performance but that didn’t really matter for me. For me it was like: Close your eyes and enjoy every moment. Omega Massif really cope with the term “Post Metal Monster” on the flyer. Doomy guitar riffs and wavering bass (which was a bit too loud in my opinion). Also to Omega Massif I have to say their much better live than on CD. Which is for me one of the must-haves of a really good band. ___________________________________________________________
Als Zugabe stimmen Omega Massif den absoluten Monstersong Unter Null an, was sogar das normalerweise sehr lethargische Münchner Publikum animiert, die Nackenmuskulatur ein bisschen zu strapazieren und den Würzburger Jungs gebührend zu verabschieden.
Nach dem Konzert haben Michi und ich uns dann noch die Geisterstadt LP geholt (was definitiv überfällig war) und dann gings nach kurzer Verabschiedung wieder nach Hause in den Bayrischen Wald.
Zuletzt noch einen ganz ganz großen Dank an den Alex, der ja das Ganze organisiert hat. Ich hoffe mal, dass wir uns alle in nicht all zu ferner Zukunft wiedersehen (aufs Sunday Smile schaff ichs leider nicht) und bedanke mich bei allen, die da waren, um den Underground-Bands ein bisschen unter die Arme zu greifen. Ich fands super, hoffentlich hat es euch genauso gut gefallen wie mir. ___________________________________________________________
As an encore Omega Massif played their downright monster-song “Unter Null”, which actually animated the lethargic Munich audience to strain their neck muscles and bid farewell the guys from Würzburg.
After the concert Michi and I fetched ourselves a copy of the “Geisterstadt” LP (that was definitely overdue) and after a short goodbye we went back into the Bavarian Forest.
At last many thanks to Alex who organized the whole thing. I hope that we’re all meeting again in the near future and thanks to everyone who was there to support some underground bands. Hopefully you enjoyed it as much as I did.
Das Review hatten wir ja schonmal, dennoch einfach nochmal. Hen:ge haben die Songs überarbeitet, gekürzt, verbessert, neu gemastert und klingt auch etwas feiner! Obendrein eine bessere MP3-Qualität. Laden und den dämonischen Klängen hingeben!
Wer Hen:ge schon kennt, der weiß wonach es klingt, wenn sich die 3 Herren aus Regensburg in Bayern die Gitarren um den Hals legen bzw. die Drumsticks zur Hand nehmen. Nach Genderrichtlinien müsste ich jetzt schreiben GitarrInnen und DrumChicks, aber das ist eine Sache, die mich im Privatleben beschäftigt und ich euch nicht aufdrängen will.
Also zurück zur Sache. Hen:ge? Was heißt das? Henge bedeutet auf japanisch "Geistererscheinung“. Wenn man den Downtempotönen der Jungs lauscht, dann weiß man auch warum. Die Musik schleicht vor sich hin. Dunkle Töne. Die BPM der Drums niedrig. Das Messer scheint greifbar nahe. Wenn man sich nicht im Griff hat, sollte man auch von dieser Soundcollage die Finger lassen. Ein Horrorfilm vertont.
Das Prinzip, dieser meiner Meinung nach sehr einzigartigen Band, ist sich zusammenzusetzen, ein morbides oder auch weniger morbides Thema in den Raum zu werfen und im Takt drum herum tanzen und dazu zu jammen. Das wird dann schnurstracks aufgenommen und veröffentlicht, was ich eine sehr tolle Sache finde, denn meist sind die ersten Ideen die Besten. Wenn man zulange an Songs bastelt läuft man Gefahr das Ziel außer Augen zu verlieren, was hier garantiert nicht passiert. Man kann sich in das Thema reinfühlen, spüren was in den Köpfen und im Herzen der Musiker zur Zeit der Aufnahme vor sich ging. Tobias hat mir die Story, zu der sie gespielt haben und die sie vorweg entwarfen, zukommen lassen:
„The investigator was staring at the sealed door again. Confused thoughts were spinning upwards his head while a downshifting feeling cought him. He knew that the tremors in his hands wouldn`t be gone until he executes "their" orders. His eyes went through uncomfortable scenery, behind him narrow stairs, the exit into the dark and cold night, knowing he couldn`t reach it before "they" catch him. Captured in a small room, filled with sheets, on their surface dust particles reminding him of them laying there a long time covering dates of death, for only he knew that no one would care for them. With cerebral anxiety his shaking hand moved towards the door. Only the vessels would make "them" disappear He knew nightshift will begin...“
Ich finde es einfach toll, wenn man als Hörer einen gewissen Freiraum hat, um sich selbst an das Thema heranzutasten. Liest man die Story, betrachtet dabei das Cover von „Theory Of Despair“ und hört zugleich die EP, dann kann man nur erahnen, worum sich dieses Thema drehen mag. Dieses Release ist auf alle Fälle eine Reise wert! Dickes Lob an die Macher Björn, Matthias und Tobias (der sehr viel zu dem positivem Ambiente im Forum beiträgt und wofür wir auch sehr dankbar sind)!

We had this review already a while ago! But Hen:ge overworked the songs again, cut it a little bit, upgraded it, remastered it and the 2 overlength songs really sound better! Into the bargain this package has a better MP3-quality. So, download it and devote to this demonic soundtrack!
Those who're aware of Hen:ge already, might know what to expect when the 3 guys from Regensburg, Bavaria place their guitars around their necks and take the drumstick into their hands. Hen:ge? What does that mean? Henge means appearance of an ghost in Japanese. When listening to the down-tempo-tunes of theirs, one might realize why. The music creeps along. Dark tones. The drum's BPM low. The knive seems to be within reach. If you don't have yourself under control, better keep your hands off this soundcollage! A horror-flick set to music. The concept behind this unique band is, getting together, choosing a more or less morbid subject and dance in step around it, while jamming to it. Straightaway this will be recorded and released, what seems like an awesome thing in my opinion, because usually first ideas come off best. When tinkering on your songs for too long, you'll run the risk of loosing your goal out of sight - a thing that's certainly not happening with Hen:ge. You're able to get a feel of the theme, feel what was going on the heads and hearts of the musicians, at the moment of the recordings. Tobias from Hen:ge told me the story, to which they played beforehand:

It is great, that the listener is given a certain freedom, to approach the theme individually. Reading the story, looking at the cover of Theory of Despair at the same time, while listening to the EP, one might only guess, what the story might center on. This release is definitely worth checking out! Kudos to the band, Björn, Matthias and Tobias (who contributes a lot to the positive feel of our forums, which is a thing we truely appreciate)

Ja Mann, das ist Stonerdoom. Doomina haben mir ja mit dem 2008er Release March On, Dead Man schon einreden können, dass in Kärnten eine neue Wüstenmetropole entstehen könnte. Jetzt weiß ich endgültig, dass Doomina Sand zum Frühstück essen und diesen mit Whiskey runterspülen.
Dies hier ist das erste Demo (4 Wochen nach Bandgründung eingespielt!) dieser noch sehr jungen Band aus dem Jahre 2006 und klingt in meinen Ohren noch etwas feiner. Was nichts Schlechtes heißen soll. Die Songs sind nur etwas doomlastiger und treffen eben meinen Geschmack haargenau am Genital, während March On, Dead Man noch ganz knapp vorbeizielte. Die Songs sind wirklich sehr dreckig, und siehe da, sogar Gesang wurde auf dem 3tten Track ("A Grave For The Masses") verwendet und das im Stile von Suma. "Let The Churches Burn" kam ja auch '06 raus. Wer von wem abgeschaut hat, ist also offen zu lassen. Oder einfach nur Zufall. Es klingt auf alle Fälle bei beiden Bands extrem fett und vernichtend! Für mich ist Doomina auf alle Fälle eine der Geheimtipps mit der Brandmarke "Made in Austria"! Das Cover wurde für den Re-Release von niemand Geringeren als Reinhold Rittinger entworfen, der auch schon die Fotografienfür Our Ceasing Voice lieferte.
PS.: Der 2te Track "... And The We Will Rise" klingt wie der ältere Bruder von Kylesa's"Running Red"!!!!!! ___________________________________________________________
Yeah man, this is Stonerdoom. With their 2008 release March On, Dead Man Doomina have already talked myself into believing that Carinthia might have a desert-metropolis soon. Now I know for sure that Doomina have sand for breakfast and wash it down with whiskey.
This is the first Demo (recorded 4 weeks after formation!) of a very young band, released in 2006 and it even sounds a little more refined in my opinion - certainly not a bad thing. The songs have a more doomy character and hit my taste straigth into the genitals, whereas March On, Dead Man aimed a little off target. The songs are really dirty, and even Suma-like vocals find their way onto the 3rd track. ("A Grave For The Masses")As it is generally known"Let The Churches Burn" was released in 2006 as well - who copied whom is a question without answer. Maybe it was a coincidence. However, it sounds great and devastating for both bands! For me Doomina is a true insider's tip - trademark: "Made in Austria"! The Cover for this Re-Release is made by Reinhold Rittinger, who also made the photographs for Our Ceasing Voice.
PS.: The second track "... And The We Will Rise" sounds like the older brother of Kylesa's "Running Red"!!!!

Das wird dann schnurstracks aufgenommen und veröffentlicht, was ich eine sehr tolle Sache finde, denn meist sind die ersten Ideen die Besten. Wenn man zulange an Songs bastelt läuft man Gefahr das Ziel außer Augen zu verlieren, was hier garantiert nicht passiert. Man kann sich in das Thema reinfühlen, spüren was in den Köpfen und im Herzen der Musiker zur Zeit der Aufnahme vor sich ging. Tobias hat mir die Story, zu der sie gespielt haben und die sie vorweg entwarfen, zukommen lassen:

With cerebral anxiety his shaking hand moved towards the door. Only the vessels would make "them" disappear He knew nightshift will begin...“
Ich finde es einfach toll, wenn man als Hörer einen gewissen Freiraum hat, um sich selbst an das Thema heranzutasten. Liest man die Story, betrachtet dabei das Cover von „Theory Of Despair“ und hört zugleich die EP, dann kann man nur erahnen, worum sich dieses Thema drehen mag. Dieses Release ist auf alle Fälle eine Reise wert! Dickes Lob an die Macher Björn, Matthias und Tobias (der sehr viel zu dem positivem Ambiente im Forum beiträgt und wofür wir auch sehr dankbar sind)!

Those who're aware of Hen:ge already, might know what to expect when the 3 guys from Regensburg, Bavaria place their guitars around their necks and take the drumstick into their hands. Hen:ge? What does that mean? Henge means appearance of an ghost in Japanese. When listening to the down-tempo-tunes of theirs, one might realize why. The music creeps along. Dark tones. The drum's BPM low. The knive seems to be within reach. If you don't have yourself under control, better keep your hands off this soundcollage! A horror-flick set to music. The concept behind this unique band is, getting together, choosing a more or less morbid subject and dance in step around it, while jamming to it. Straightaway this will be recorded and released, what seems like an awesome thing in my opinion, because usually first ideas come off best. When tinkering on your songs for too long, you'll run the risk of loosing your goal out of sight - a thing that's certainly not happening with Hen:ge. You're able to get a feel of the theme, feel what was going on the heads and hearts of the musicians, at the moment of the recordings. Tobias from Hen:ge told me the story, to which they played beforehand:

It is great, that the listener is given a certain freedom, to approach the theme individually. Reading the story, looking at the cover of Theory of Despair at the same time, while listening to the EP, one might only guess, what the story might center on. This release is definitely worth checking out! Kudos to the band, Björn, Matthias and Tobias (who contributes a lot to the positive feel of our forums, which is a thing we truely appreciate)

Es ist schon faszinierend wie sich Erwartungen auf das Erleben einer Platte auswirken. So auch bei der Promo von Whales And Aurora aus Vincenca Italien. Was mir hier als Sludge vorgelegt wurde beginnt eher wie klassischer Post-Rock mit Gitarren-Delays, Rückwarts-Effekten und Drums mit massig Hall. Gerade als ich mich frage ob manch anderer unter Sludge vielleicht etwas anderes versteht als ich bricht die Post-Rock Collage plötzlich zusammen und verzerrte Gitarren reissen mich zusammen mit einem heftigen Schrei aus allem Zweifel. Was jetzt folgt ist harte, schleppende Musik in Richtung Cult Of Luna, wobei der Sänger von Whales And Aurora noch ein Stück mehr Death Metal mit einfliessen lässt. Einige interessante Akkordwechsel und Schlagzeug-fills verhindern dass sich Langeweile einstellt. So wechselt der erste Track "The Long Process" immer wieder zwischen Sludge und lupenreinen Post-Rock inklusive doppelter, flächiger Tremolo-Gitarren. Nur der Bass bewahrt stehts das schön dreckige Sludge-Gefühl.
"Abandoned Among Echoes" beginnt mit einem ruhigen, sehr interessanten Part der leicht in die Richtung Mercury Program geht. Doch auch hier kehrt die Band schnell zu drückendem Post-Metal/Sludge zurück. Kleine Riffs abseits von Stakkato-Gitarren sorgen für die nötige Abwechslung. Sänger (und Bassist) Giacomo Totti hat seine Stimme voll unter Kontrolle und überzeugt mit ungebrochener Intensität. Nach fünf Minuten Härte endet das Lied in einem ruhigen, sehr melodiösen Part.
"Left To The Waves" besteht zunächst nur mit sich steigernden Noise-Effekten zu denen sich bald ein Schlagzeug gesellt, alles klingt bedrohlich und man erwartet jeden Moment die typischen Sludge-Gitarrenflächen. Tatsächlich ist der folgende Teil rhythmisch um einiges interessanter. Es wird klar, dass Whales And Aurora mehr als nur zwei Stilrichtungen mit in ihre Musik einfließen lassen. Dieser Track ist voll von unverbrauchten Ideen bis hin zu cleanen Akkorden, die in meinen Ohren nach Surf-Musik klingen, und einer bluesigen Slide-Gitarre. Jeder Steigerung folgt die Nächste. Nichts wird zur Routine, ein absoluter Highlight-Track.
Auch der letzte Track namens "A Winter Without Sun" beginnt ruhig mit einzelnd angeschlagenen Gittarenakkorden. Doch bereits nach einer Minute bricht eine Gitarrenwand die Ruhe. Beim Gesang gibts keine großen Experimente er trägt aber zur Gesamtstimmung bei. Nach knapp drei Minuten verklingt plötzlich alles und nur ein einsamer, unverzerrter Akkord und ein tomlastiges Schlagzeug bleiben übrig. Was nun folgt ist fast schon Ambient. Die Jungs pfeifen auf die üblichen Songstrukturen und können sich auch über längere Zeit zurückhalten. Die Sludge-Walze kommt aber doch noch ein letztes Mal zurück und wird langsamer... und langsamer. Wie ein verletzter Urzeitriese schleppt sich die Band voran und haucht ihr Lebenslicht in einer Cacophonie aus Rückkopplung und Filter-Effekten aus.
Diese Promo ist in Sachen Produktion und musikalischem Können einwandtfrei und sei jedem Freund von Sludge, aber auch härterem Post-Rock wie Pelican oder Red Sparowes ans Herz gelegt. Die Band ist im Moment auf der Suche nach einem Netlabel und sie sind sich noch im Unklarem ob die Promo als freier Download zur Verfügung gestellt wird.
It is fascinating how expectiations have such a strong influence on experiencing a record. Same goes for the Promo release of Vincena, Italy's Band Whales And Aurora. Given to me under the label "sludge", the first song starts with what is much more reminiscent of post-rock utilizing guitar delay effects, backward-loops and reverb on the drums. Just as I am wondering whether I misinterpreted the term sludge, a huge wall of sound consisting of distorted guitars and a scream tear away every doubt. What follows is heavy, slow music in the vein of Cult Of Luna, while Whales And Aurora's vocalist adds a bit more death metal techniques. Interesting chord progressions and drumfills keep the music from getting stagnant. The first track "A Long Process" is constantly shifting through the different dynamics of sludge and pure post-rock including twin tremolo-guitar pads. Only the bass-guitar is consistently keeping that raw sludge sound.
"Abandoned Among Echoes" starts out with a calm, very interesting part going slightly into a Mercury Program direction. The band returns to the powerful sludge/post-metal sound rather quickly, though. Little riffs apart from staccato-guitars provide the needed variety. Vocalist (and bass player) Giacomo Totti has full control of his voice and keeps a steady level of intesity. After five minutes of fierceness the track ends with a mellow, very melodious part.
"Left To The Waves" is initially just gradually increasing noise-effects until the drums set in, everything sounds menacing and you begin to expect the typical walls of distortion. In fact the following part is a lot more rhythmically interesting. It's obvious that Whales And Aurora let more than just two styles of music influence their song-writing. This track is filled with creative ideas right up to clean chords, which sound like surf music to me, and a bluesy slide guitar. Every climax is followed by the next and ou never get a feeling of routine. It is an absolute highlight track.
The second track named "A Winter Without Sun" also begins quietly with solitary, stroked guitar chords. Already one minute into the track the serenity is again disrupted by distorted guitars. The vocals, though not varying at all, add to the overall atmosphere. After three minutes of uncompromised sludge the heavy guitar fade into the background and let a single, clean guitar come through, supported by the drummers great use of the toms coming close to ambient music. These guys don't care about standartized song-structures and can keep themselves under control for a longer period of time as well. When finally the sludge aspect is taking over again it's gradually getting heavier and heavier. Like a giant wounded primeval creature the band is dragging onwards until it breaks down in a cacophony of guitar-feedback and filter-effects.
This Promo release in flawless in terms of production and musical abilities. It's recommended to everyone who enjoys sludge or harder types of Post-Rock like Pelican or Red Sparowes. The band is currently looking for a netlabel and is uncertain whether they will release the promo as a free download.

Zentnerschwer beginnt das 2008er Demo von Head Of The Taurus, sehr langsam und schwerfällig bewegt sich ihr zwei Tracks starkes Debüt, vergeichbar mit einer Planierraupe. Und doch kommt in den 20 Minuten keine einziges mal Langeweile auf, wie das, meiner Meinung nach, bei doomigerem Material leider öfter der Fall ist.
Das Trio aus Deutschland versieht ihre Eigenkompositionen mit kryptischen Zahlenkombinationen (022808 und 081807), verzichtet sowohl auf Gesang als auch auf Samples (die sich ja immer größerer Beliebtheit erfreuen) und konzentriert sich darauf, ausschließlich mit ihrer Musik Stimmungen im Hörer hervorzurufen... und was für eine Stimmung das ist.
Mit repetitivem Riffing und schleppendem Drumming beschwören sie eine Weltuntergangsstimmung, so dass das Demo auch gut den Namen von Marduks 2003er Output World Funeral haben könnte. Sehr düster und melancholisch kommt das ganze daher, was durch die totale Abwesenheit von Gesang nur verstärkt wird.
Die drei Jungs (Henner, Thomas & Tim) nehmen zur Zeit diese Tracks für eine Split mit Daleth nochmal neu auf und wollen danach auch live auftreten (am 4.4.2009 mit Fire Walk With Me und UtopiaII). Ich kann den Doom-Fans unter euch nur raten, diese Band ein bischen weiter zu verfolgen, das könnte was größeres werden. Und ich denke, dass die Split, genauso wie diese Demo hier, eine Planierraupe wird, von der man sich nur allzu gerne überwalzen lässt.
Head of the Taurus' 2008 demo hits you like a ton of bricks; very slowly moving and as graceful as a bulldozer, this two track demo is going to creep into your ears. In its whole playtime of 20 minutes it doesn't get boring once, unlike lots of other doom CDs out there. At least, that's how I feel...
The Germany-based trio doesn't use vocals or samples (although these are getting more and more popular), heck, they don't even give explanatory names to their songs, just some cryptic combinations of numbers (022808 and 081807 respectively). But what they do do is stir up a lot of feelings and emotions in the listeners... and what fellings they evoke.
With their repetitive riffing and slow, crushing drumming they create an apocalyptic vibe. They could have named their demo like Marduk had named their 2003 output, World Funeral, it's that bleak and melancholic. The total absence of explanatory lyrics/vocals just intensifies that vibe.
At the moment, the three guys (Henner, Thomas & Tim) are rerecording these two songs for a split with Daleth and are looking forward to playing their songs live on stage (4th of April in Moosburg with Fire Walk With Me and UtopiaII). So, if you are into Doom I can only urge you to stick with this band, they have the potential to be a really great band. And I think, that the split CD, as well as the demo, will become a bulldozer you love to be crushed by.
Kaum zu glauben, dass wirklich schon eineinhalb Jahre vergangen sind, seit die zotteligen UFOMAMMUT Innsbruck mit ihren tiefen Bässen vibrieren ließen. Rechtzeitig zum Release ihres neuen Albums "IDOLUM" werden sie anrücken um in der PMK wieder ein Feuerwerk an markerschütterndem und zähnefletschendem Rock abzufackeln. Ihr Sound, sicher verstaut irgendwo zwischen SUNN O))), NEUROSIS, PINK FLOYD und KYUSS, fährt euch aus den Boxen direkt ins Rückenmark! Diesmal nehmen sie ihre Labelkollegen von LENTO mit. Der Instrumental-Koloss aus fünf Leuten (3 Gitarren, Bass, Drums) bringt uns das neue Album "EARTHEN" mit. Auch sie haben sich dem langsamen, schweren Riff verschrieben und mischen gekonnt Ambient mit Hardcore, Postrock mit Psychedelia.
Doch außer diesen beiden mediterranen Rockbastionen werden sich noch die gewaltigen SUMA aus Schweden die Ehre geben. Sie sind psychedelisch wie KYUSS, doomig wie ELECTRIC WIZARD, hart rockend wie MELVINS, noisig wie UNSANE, garniert mit hypnotischen Drone-Passagen á la EARTH – kurz: eine der besten europäischen Bands!
Und auch diesmal gibt´s wieder was fürs Auge: MALLEUS werden uns den Abend mit einer RockArt-Ausstellung und einer Visual-Show zum UFOMAMMUT-Konzert versüßen. Die KünstlerInnen haben schon für Acts wie QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, IGGY POP, MONSTER MAGNET, BECK, UNSANE, TURBONEGRO (und viele mehr) Plakate designed. Sie haben Arbeiten für MTV Italien oder das ROLLING STONE Magazin gemacht, haben für YOB oder BABY WOODROSE Plattencovers entworfen und auch schon einige Videos (für z.B. UFOMAMMUT) gedreht.
Unsere "Resident-DJs" REV. RUMBLE und HOWLING BASTARD werden den Abend noch fein ausklingen lassen...
"Ashes And Iron" mauern dich langsam in ein Labyrinth aus dicken unüberwindbaren Gitarrenwänden ein. Es gilt Hindernisse zu überwinden. 33 Minuten Zeit um deinem Schicksal zu entkommen. Der Countdown läuft. Verzweiflung kommt auf. Sie lassen sie tief in deinem Knochenmark spüren. Gleichzeitig aber treiben sie dich mit ihrer Dynamik an aus dem Labyrinth zu finden. Die Drums und die Bassline geben dir die Kraft die Hoffnung nicht aufzugeben und dein Ziel nicht aus den Augen zu verlieren. Die Stimme scheint der Wegweiser zu sein. Du musst nur genau hinhören um zu verstehen welche Richtung du einzuschlagen hast. Am Ende erwartet dich nicht nur das Gefühl von Freiheit, sondern viel mehr. Du wirst etwas über dich selbst gelernt haben!
"Ashes And Iron" aus St. Louis bestehen aus Thad Martin (Drums), Dave Lawrence (Bass), Chris Denton (Guitars), David Miller (Guitars), Ian Mahan (Guitars), Kenny Snarzyk (Keyboards/Vocals). Mit dieser Demo schmeißen sie 3 Tracks und 33 Minuten geilsten Sludge raus und zählen meiner Meinung nach jetzt schon zu den ganz Großen in dieser Sparte. Wer kann das nach einer ersten Demo-CD schon von sich behaupten?!
Man kann "Ashes And Iron" durchaus in einem Atemzug mit "Neurosis","Irreversible", "Isis", "Cult Of Luna", "Callisto", "Humanfly", "Manatees", "Pelican", "Latitudes" oder "Mouth Of The Architect" nennen und das sagt schon jede Menge über das Niveau der 6 Musiker aus. Was ich auch noch sehr geil finde ist, dass sie sogar die Wav-Dateien auf ihrer Homepage zur Verfügung stellen.
HÖCHSTE EMPFEHLUNG und 10/10 Punkten von mir. Besser hätte man eine Demo-CD nicht gestalten können!

"Ashes and Iron" are easily named in the same breath as "Neurosis","Irreversible", "Isis", "Cult Of Luna", "Callisto", "Humanfly", "Manatees", "Pelican", "Latitudes" or "Mouth Of The Architect" and this speaks for the level and competence of the 6 St. Louis musicians. A real cool bonus is, that the band offers their EP as .WAV files on their website.
Absolutely recommended and 10/10 points. There is no better way to create a demo-cd.
